Vauxhall's new two-seat EV city car concept (2011)

Alongside the Astra GTC and Zafira Tourer, Vauxhall (and thus Opel) is unveiling something a little more ‘out there’ at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

It’s this tiny city car, which won’t have a name until the official unveiling next week.
And this Vauxhall concept car is what exactly?

A little electric car with Ampera-influenced stlying, which Vauxhall claims has both ‘production potential’ and could ‘revolutionise urban transport, especially for younger drivers and those on a very tight budget’.

Think of it as something that offers a little bit more weather protection than Renault’s Twizy.
What else do we know about Vauxhall's Twizy EV?

More details will be released next week, but for now we know the concept car has a 60-mile range, a 75mph top speed, and seating for two (in a tandem configuration).

Vauxhall also says the kerbweight is around a third of a modern small car’s, so reckon on it weighing under 500kg.

Alongside a rival for the Mini and Fiat 500 being launched next year (it’s internally dubbed Junior), Vauxhall/Opel will also launch an innovative city car in 2014.

Maserati SUV concept car: the leaked first photo?

Maserati will show an SUV concept car like this at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. It's the long-awaited Maserati 4x4 shown in thinly veiled show car guise; you can expect something very similar on London and Cheshire driveways from 2013.

Based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2013 Maser SUV will have totally new bodywork and a bespoke interior. Maser knows if it is to dip into the parts sharing game, it must change things wholesale.
Maserati SUV: I thought you had leaked photos?

So did we! CAR thought it had obtained a photo ahead of a planned unveiling on Tuesday at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show after it was released prematurely in IAA literature.

Turns out it was an artist's impression crafted for Quattroruote magazine in Italy. Doh.

The 4x4 is part of a plan to lift Maserati sales tenfold. Last year, Modena sold 5600 vehicles, but with the SUV and a host of new product - including 2012's new Quattroporte, which will extend to include six-cylinder power and diesels - it hopes to hit as high as 50,000 units a year.

Providing the go in this reskinned Grand Cherokee is an all-Italian Maserati 4.7-litre V8 mustering some 450bhp. As previously reported by CAR GAMES, Maser will have to offer a diesel in Europe to be competitive; a 3.0 V6 TD is likely to come from derv specialist VM Motori.
What else do we know about the Maserati SUV concept car?

We'll hear the full story on 13 September 2011 at the IAA Frankfurt auto show. But for now we'd say this is one very-close-to-production Maser off-roader.

The car will be built at the same plant as the Jeep Grand Cherokee - Chrysler's Jefferson North plant in Detroit. Modena-meets-Michigan.

Toyota FT-86 Concept, the Frankfurt teaser video

Toyota will show an updated FT-86 concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show starting next week. It's issued this teaser video showing a few snatchshots of the new rear-wheel drive sports car.

Don't hold your horses, though. We hear it's just a new paint job - we'll have to wait until the Tokyo motor show at the end of November 2011 for the finished production car.gameshttp://www.carsgames.biz/

Toyota has form for long, drawn-out concept car gestations. Remember the Lexus LF-A?

It should be worth the wait this time. The FT-86 is the codename for Toyota's new Celica heir - a 2.0-litre flat four, rear-wheel drive sports car designed to reignite the passion in the Japanese brand. It'll cost around £25,000 and go on sale in summer 2012, around the same time as the Subaru BRZ being developed alongside it.

Eterniti Hemera (2011) at Frankfurt motor show

Eterniti Motors – the fledgling UK luxury car start-up – has shown its new Hemera SUV ahead of its debut at this week’s 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

It’s now become apparent that Eterniti will rebody the Porsche Cayenne 4x4 at its London factory to an even higher spec – they say – than when it emerges from Stuttgart.
So the Eterniti Hemera is a posh Cayenne?

Seemingly, yes. These first renerings show a crossover with numerous revised body panels, but its makers say the majority of the changes will take place inside.

Eterniti (not to be confused with Infiniti, based next door at the IAA Frankfurt show this week) says the cabin has been retrimmed to provide two reclining rear seats, iPads and drinks chillers.

On the face of it, the Hemera is aimed slap bang at international markets where top-end, luxury sporting SUVs are popular. Think the Middle East, Russia and emerging Asian markets. Sounds like the same sort of space as Aston Martin is targeting with its proposed Lagonda SUV.
How serious are Eterniti?

That’s the $64m question. The Hemera at Frankfurt is described as a prototype, but the company promises first deliveries in 2012.

Eterniti is based in London and is backed by an international consortium with experience in retail, premium products, motor sport and high-end components. The details are likely to be made public at the IAA – an important announcement, because there will be plenty of scepticism over this project.

So far, Eterniti has confirmed that Alastair Macqueen and Johnny Herbert are involved. Macqueen worked on the Jaguar XJ220 supercar project and won at Le Mans, while Herbert was an F1 driver for a decade.
Eterniti Motors: the plan

Eterniti will start in London but says it wants to launch further showrooms around the world from 2012. If there’s a market for souped-up Cayennes – and that’s already a crowded marketplace with numerous German tuners in play – then insiders suggest we may even see a full range of Eterniti luxury cars in future.

If they can get in there before Lagonda, and the proposed luxo-SUVs from Jaguar and Lamborghini, then maybe there’s a chance of success. This start-up may yet prove to be more nimble than the giants of the motor industry.

Aston Martin DBS Carbon (2011) at Frankfurt motor show

There's a new Aston Martin model at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. In fact, there are two new Astons at this year's IAA. Or we could stop dressing up the facts and admit that it's really just a special edition, the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition, available in both Coupe and Volante forms.
I thought there already was a Aston Martin DBS Carbon Edition?

No silly, you're getting confused with 2009's DBS Carbon Black. But apparently that model was a success, so Aston has followed it up with the DBS Carbon Edition. Rather than solely being available in Carbon Black paint (though that dark hue is still an option) the new Carbon Edition can also be had in Flame Orange or Ceramic Grey. Apparently there are seven layers of paint, all of which are then given a 25-hour hand polish, and if you want to complicate things you can spec a satin lacquer finish too.
What else is special about the DBS Carbon Edition?

The wheels are 10-spoke gloss black items (with either a full gloss black or reversed diamond turned finish), the brake callipers are black (but can be optioned in yellow, orange, red or grey), the grille is black, there are carbonfibre mirror casings, carbon rear light in-fills, and smoked rear lights.

Inside you get the choice of black (obviously) or orange leather, and the whole stitching and finishing process takes over 70 man hours – a machine might speed things up, no? Plus the headlining is quilted, the dash features a hand-layered carbonfibre finish, and the magnesium alloy panels have carbon tips. Finally, a special plaque lets you know you've bought the DBS Carbon Edition.

Apart from that it's standard DBS, which means great looks, a stonking 510bhp 6.0-litre V12, and the latest Garmin sat-nav from the Virage. Deliveries start in early 2012, with the Coupe costing £186,582 and the Volante setting you back £196,581, respectively £5770 and £5769 more than the standard DBS models.
